Does Red Meat Actually Prevent Heart Disease?

Writer's picture: Miranda StapletonMiranda Stapleton

For years, we've heard doctors and magazines tell us to cut down our consumption of red meat if we want to reduce our risk of heart disease. While we should eat a healthy diet consisting of plant based proteins, lean meats, and fish, you actually should eat red meat as well! But beware- not all red meat is created equally. In a nutshell, Grass-Fed beef is better for the cows, better for you, and better for the environment. To be labeled Grass-Fed by the USDA, cattle must be raised on a diet consisting of grass! This sounds obvious but many cattle farmers feed their cattle with corn. This is actually sad because cows do not digest corn well, but this method is used to "fatten up" the beef quickly and inexpensively. Remember, anything that is put into your food to "fatten it up" will also "fatten you up!"And if you are an environmental crusader, the carbon foot print for Grass-Fed beef is much less than traditional farming methods so you can still enjoy beef in moderation without causing such a great environmental impact.
