Overview:
I started the Keto Diet exactly one week ago from today. The first day I felt great. I wasn’t hungry at all and didn’t need to snack. I actually found it difficult to eat enough food because I wasn’t hungry. Day two and three were much tougher. I was starving and had to continuously eat high fat snacks to try to fight cravings. It felt like every time I ate my body was hungrier. I think it was because my glycogen stores were getting depleted and my body hadn't begun burning fat for fuel. It wasn't recognizing that I was fueling it. I downloaded a Keto App in addition to MyFitnessPal to log my food. MyFitnessPal is a good tool, but it doesn’t take into account Net Carbs (Total Carbohydrate- Fiber). Cross referencing both of these apps was a helpful tool to make sure I was staying on track with my macros. The Keto Diet must be done correctly for it to work. If you ingest too many carbs or too much protein, you will not reach ketosis. This is probably the most challenging aspect of the whole diet, especially for people who have never kept up with macros before. I definitely recommend downloading an app to do it for you.
Impression:
So far I really enjoy the diet. I have been totally shocked by the food I was eating throughout the day at work prior to this challenge. On Monday alone I was offered and passed up:
· Cupcakes
· Pimento cheese with pita chips
· Frozen yogurt
· Red velvet cake
· French fries
I never considered myself a snacker and always thought I ate clean but seeing all of these snacks and knowing I would have accepted some if not all of them, probably after I had finished the snacks I bring for myself each day, was very eye opening.
This week I notice my stomach is much flatter. I have also lost 3 pounds. According to the books I’ve read, you lose water weight first since the Keto Diet is a diuretic so I can’t say that these pounds won’t return when I eventually finish my 4-6 week trial. Make sure to drink lots of water and add salt to your food to keep your electrolytes in balance while you are on this diet.
It has been weird for me to intentionally add salt, fat, butter, and cheese into my diet in such a large quantity. These are all foods I have limited for years. I just decided to let go and trust the process. If something happens and this high fat diet ends up making me gain weight (I don’t think it will) it won’t be hard to lose when I go back to eating my normal balanced diet. I am excited to see how week 2 goes!
Tips:
Buy a keto app to track your macros
Drink plenty of water and don’t be afraid of salt
Do not use this diet as an excuse to eat fast food. You want to be as healthy as possible and eat whole foods.
If anyone else has tried this diet or has any questions I would love to hear from you!
